Description
This Mikuni TM38 Non Pump type TM Flatslide single carburetor conversion kit is for fitment to early kick-start Yamaha TT and XT600 models. Please confirm you have one of the three same suitable frames and air-box as pictured. The pictured blue frame and some others will have a larger diameter air box rubber connection pipe on the RH side, where select the appropriate forked adapter option.
Mod’s required on TT600 36A, 59X and 3SW models are as follows and shown in the picture with the white frame: The top barrel fin needs grinding back for manifold clearance. The cable needs to be set as low as possible into the carb and aimed off to the side for frame clearance where a a little material on the frame may need to be removed. Otherwise all good and the choke knob can be accessed on these models if ever needed.
These kits are available in both this the budget priced TM38 and high performance TM42 pumper version. The TM40 pumper will not fit with this frame due to a lack of available space. The Belgarda 600 has a different frame and kit (we also build) which is available in TM38, TM40 pumper and with that bike, the TM42 with a small frame modification required.
The TM38 though our budget option for these motorcycles is still a step up in performance over most OEM carbs and an easy resolution to non repairable, worn out stock units. These have for decades been the economical replacement carb of choice for Honda XR600 and XR650 riders who have worn out their OEM carbs or are just over some of their inherent problems. All this means getting the full enjoyment out of your motorcycle has never been so easy, say goodbye to hard starting, hesitations and flatspots. These Mikuni carburetors like the TM42 will adapt to your stock air-box when using our supplied, forked air-box adapter.
The kit comes with a Mikuni TM38-86 carb, cast two into one manifold with mounting hardware, heavy duty rubber engine mounting flange to isolate the heat, a forked air-box adapter with a carb end hose clamp (requiring the shortening of your OEM rubbers for connection), a 1/4 turn quick action throttle and a nylon lined cable with a 90 degree lower fitting which screws directly into the carburetor top for clearance . There are jets provided that must be changed as well as spares for fine tuning.
The carb comes with a rarely ever required knob choke where if in colder climates you find you do need to use the choke and access to the knob is an issue, we sell separately either a cable choke adapter kit ( MK-412 ) or a complete kit with universal bracket and 310mm long cable ( MK-412-310C ).
Climate, altitude and fuel density from different octane fuels all have varying effects on final fine tuning as does cam, exhaust and cylinder head porting etc. For this reason, we have included what we have found to be a range of jets to allow you to tune to most variables worldwide.
You will instantly experience better throttle response, improved acceleration and performance. If chasing optimum performance check out our TM42 Pumper Carb options.
IF NOT WANTING TO PURCHASE THE KIT IN ITS ADVERTISED FORM PLEASE FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW.
If wishing to modify or use your existing cables or mounting flange to suit the Mikuni TM38 you can purchase the carburetor, tuner jet kit and or what ever other components you want individually by following the directions below.
On the main menu to the left of the page, hover over the carb listing for TM Carbs (non Pump) and then select TM38 from the drop down list. When clicking on any individual size Mikuni carb from the drop down list it will put you into a page showing not only the Mikuni carb itself but also any items relevant to that carb, being Mikuni jets, Mikuni flanges, Mikuni carb tuner kits, Mikuni cables , Mikuni throttles, Mikuni air-cleaners and a range of Mikuni carb to OEM air box adaptors etc to also suit. This also makes alternate jet selection easy for you if you have your own spec as only the type jets for that particular carb are shown.
Click on the carb itself (TM38-86) if wanting to view the full details and or to make your purchase. Then back arrow back in the carbs main page and go into the tuner kits, which show in the sales drop down list the jetting kits we have for confirmed suitable engines for that particular carb. After having heaps of trouble getting my 3sw tt 600 running correctly with the old worn out stock carbs, I found Mikuni Oz offered a single 38mm flat slide kit that contained everything needed including a range of jets to suit..
Delivery was prompt.. fit on the 3sw needed a trim of the top cylinder fin to allow the manifold to sit correctly..( a simple and easy thing to do )results are awesome. After chatting with Tom and following the comprehensive ‘how to’ jet guide included in the kit… the results are incredible .!so super strong off the bottom that just rolling the throttle lifts the front easily out of corners in 2nd gear… pulls through the middle hard and revs out clean up top… not a pop or a fart anywhere through bumps or on trailing throttle… Seriously never thought a carb could make such a difference..
Again, Mikuni Oz and Tom could have not been more helpful in answering my rookie questions all with their only goal of complete customer satisfaction being their priority… 5 stars on this one easily… now to build my next tt a 59x ……😁

I ordered the single TM38 carb kit for my Canadian 1983 TT600 and I couldn’t be more happy. Everything included in one kit, easy to fit and no grinding on my model. After a couple of hours trying out the different jets and needles that were provided I now have one kick starts (most of the time) power wheelies and a strong top end. What’s not to like? Plus a great exchange rate and contant tracking updates from Australia Post. I did have to pay the GST(tax) in Canada, but it still ended up being less than half the price of other options.

1984 XT600 Tenere 34L. I was having issues with a misfire at around 2500 rpm, and again at high revs, also when giving the throttle a blip on down shift it wouldn’t respond, started easily and ran fine apart from the above. All searches on the internet pointed to an electrical problem which is why I am detailing my issues….. This carb kit fixed all those problems and now she runs as she should. Couldn’t be more happy with the result.
